Entering the ring is a hard-hitting yet tender musical adaptation! Rocky Balboa is a small-time Philadelphia boxer who is chosen to take on the reigning world heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed, when the undefeated fighter’s scheduled opponent is injured. As he diligently trains for the fight, Rocky begins a relationship with Adrian, a wallflower who is tired of being pushed around by her brother. As their love grows, Rocky and Adrian each find their inner strength and bring out the best in each other. With equal parts grit and heart, Rocky is about the triumph of spirit, strength, and love.
A message from the Director:
Forget about the boxing. Forget about the fight. ROCKY THE MUSICAL is, at its heart, a sweet love story. A Cinderella story. A story about two lost souls – one with big dreams, the other afraid to dream. They meet, fall in love, and together they bring out the true spirit of one another and face their seemingly insurmountable challenges together.
People see Rocky as a down and out loser – a thug. They see Adrian as a mousy, timid loner. But what they see in each other forms that magical connection that we all dream of. Through Rocky’s love Adrian becomes a beautiful, warm, loving woman. Rocky gains the strength and courage to fulfill his dreams – to face the World Champion and, as he tells Adrian, to “go the distance.” Yes, the climax of the story is the meeting of these two competitors – one with the title of Champion and the other with the heart of a champion – in a spectacular and beautifully choreographed struggle in the boxing ring which will excite and inspire everyone who sees this beautiful show.
It’s a show filled with wonderful music and dancing and a story written by Sylvester Stallone (creator of the incredibly popular ROCKY films) and Thomas Meehan (a creator of the award winning musical ANNIE). When I saw this show on Broadway I was totally swept away and I couldn’t wait until I could present it to you on our stage. I urge everyone to come and see and feel what I felt. Whatever you think you know about ROCKY THE MUSICAL I guarantee it will delight and inspire you. — Ed Flesch, Artistic Director
